Thelma Irene Hogue was born March 19, 1924 in Sargent, Nebraska to Sylvia (Brown) Kennedy and Reed Kennedy.

On February 18, 1942 she was united in marriage with Lyle Harvey Hogue. To this union were born three sons: Lyle Evan, Larry Gene and Lee Curtis.

For many years, Lyle worked construction and drove a truck cross country and Irene stayed home with the children or followed him around to different towns, but most of the time they lived in Des Moines and Kellerton.

Irene had various jobs over the years including working at a motel in Des Moines and for the Kellerton School District in the lunchroom. Irene worked for 17 years at Ringgold County Hospital before retiring and moving to Creston to be closer to her sister and parents after the death of her husband. She lived 17 years in Creston before moving back to Mount Ayr to live at Heritage Park. In 2009 she entered Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Irene was at her best when she was taking care of someone. She was a great help to her son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Becky Hogue, when Lee had a liver transplant. Irene helped take care of Lee when he got home from the hospital recuperating. Later when two children were born, Irene helped out again and stayed with the family for extended periods of time. She loved little kids and always stopped to take a peek at a new one she happened to pass by.

Irene always loved music. She and special friend Ivan Chafa attended many dance jams over the years. Some of her grandkids will remember the song she used to sing to them, -“The Key’s In The Mailbox, Come On In.”

Irene passed away November 6, 2018 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

She is survived by sons, Lyle Evan (Janet) and Larry Gene (Arletta), and daughter-in-law Becky Hogue along with grandchildren, Lyle Kevin Hogue, Tyanne (Bob) Carey, Dawn (Matt) Morris, Scott Hogue, Wade Hogue and Parker Hogue and 8 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law Jerry Lorenz and Lowell Grimm; sister-in-law Jean Hogue and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lyle in 1985; youngest son Lee in 1999; brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Gwen (Livesay) Kennedy; sister Velma King Lorenz, brother-in-law Russell King; sister-in-law Clara Mae Grimm, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ava and Verle Grim; brother-in-law F.M. “Short” Hogue and her special friend Ivan Chafa in 2013.

Memorials may be directed to the Mount Ayr Health Care Center or Donors Choice of Charity.
