Merle David Triggs

Merle David Triggs (1962 – 2021)

Merle David Triggs was born September 25, 1962 to Merle Duane Triggs and Iona (Baker) Triggs at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Merle attended the Mount Ayr Community School and graduated in 1981. He was actively involved in the wrestling program and qualified and medaled at the State Wrestling Tournament. While in high school, Merle started his mechanic career working with Bushman’s Equipment/John Deere. After graduating from High School, he started working for Bob Sickels at Sickels Automotive and gained a lot of knowledge from Bob.

In 1985, Merle married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Kay Green, and started building their life together. He then started working for Jim Jobe Chevrolet as a mechanic before he opened his own mechanic business in January 1986. Merle became known as one of the best mechanics in Southern Iowa and his business grew rapidly. People would drive quite some distance for him to work on their vehicles. Merle was very gifted working with his hands and building about anything including the family home as well as the shop where his business was conducted.

Merle had a passion for the great outdoors and enjoyed hunting coyotes and crows. He loved target shooting his rifles, seeing how far and accurate he could be, as well as making his own ammunition and reloading. He loved taking Rhonda on motorcycle rides when they could get away. Merle left the mechanic world serving the public and started helping with the family farming operation doing a multitude of things that would need done and filled in wherever he was needed. He loved building fence and was one of the best fence builders around. His most recent love in farming was operating the new bulldozer cleaning out fence rows and an old building site.

Merle and Rhonda have three children: Lucan Lee Triggs (wife Jessica), (Merle) Lyndon Triggs, and Lindsey Ardell Catanzareti (husband Joe); along with four loving grandchildren: Lauren Triggs, Nicholas Triggs, Adrian Catanzareti and Joslyn Catanzareti. Merle was blessed to have Lucan start helping in the shop while Lucan was in high school as well as when Lucan returned to Mount Ayr for around 10 years. When Merle retired from the mechanic world and started helping with the farming operation, he had the privilege to work with Lyndon and Joe as well as Rhonda and Lindsey. Merle courageously fought and defeated cancer in 2013 and was very fortunate to be able to extend his life. Merle loved the farming life and working side-by-side with the family and being able to work on various projects to help the entire operation as he saw fit.

Merle passed away on October 12, 2021.

Those left to cherish Merle include his wife, Rhonda Triggs, children Lucan (Jessica) Triggs, Lyndon Triggs and Lindsey (Joe) Catanzareti, his four grandchildren Lauren, Nick, Adrian and Joslyn, his mother, Iona Triggs, his siblings Marilyn (Paul) Bierma, Mark (Lynda) Triggs, Melonie (Tyler) Knapp, brother-in-law and sister-in-laws Marty (Ronda) Green, Elizabeth Brand, Bonnie Randles and many relatives.

Merle was preceded in death by his father (Merle Duane), his brother (Max Triggs), his father-in-law (Dick Green) and his mother-in-law (Joann Green).

Private services will be held Sunday, October 17, 2021, with burial at the Rose Hill Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established in his name to be decided later.
